SSAS SCIENCE DAY!
For British Science Week this year, our school celebrated with a special Science Day, giving children the opportunity to explore, investigate and discover through a wide range of exciting hands-on activities. The aim of the day was to inspire curiosity and enthusiasm for science and technology, encouraging pupils to think like scientists while having fun learning about the world around them.
Each year group worked together to plan a range of enjoyable science and technology–based activities for the children to take part in. Our dedicated Science Day allowed pupils to spend the entire day carrying out investigations, building constructions and exploring scientific ideas in creative ways.
Here are some of the activities the children thoroughly enjoyed:
Upper KS2 :
Investigations linked to inheritance and genes, making periscopes, completing paper aircraft challenges and building paper rockets.
Lower KS2:
Making paper helicopters and rockets, constructing roller coasters and creating shadow puppets.
KS1:
A nature scavenger hunt, constructing pencil pots, making bath bombs and completing a materials scavenger hunt.
EYFS:
Making bird feeders, creating colour-changing petals and pond dipping.
In addition, each year group studied a famous scientist. We made a conscious effort to include scientists from a range of backgrounds and ensured a balanced representation of both men and women. The scientists explored across the school included Mary Anning, David Attenborough, Alexander Graham Bell, Dorothy Vaughan, Jane Goodall, Thomas Edison, Ada Lovelace and Lewis Latimer. On Science Day, each year group shared presentations about what they had learned about their chosen scientist.
We were also fortunate to have some excellent presentations during our science assemblies from parents, Mrs Gordon and Mr Markovits, as well as a guest speaker who plans to set up a robotics club after Easter. He even brought along his robot dog, which created great excitement among the children!
Overall, the day was very enjoyable. The children showed great enthusiasm, curiosity and creativity throughout the activities, and it was wonderful to see them developing their scientific thinking in such engaging ways.
