Year 5 Explore Jewish Beliefs
On Monday, Year 5 were visited by a Rabbi, a Jewish teacher and religious leader. He shared stories from the Old Testament, including the story of Abraham and Isaac from the Book of Genesis. In this story, Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice his son Isaac as a test of faith, but an angel stopped him at the last moment.
The children looked at a painting by Caravaggio showing this scene and discussed how stories can be represented in art. They also tried on kippahs, which are worn as a sign of respect and to remind Jewish people of God.
The rabbi showed the class a copy of the Torah and explained how it is written and why a yad is used as a pointer when reading the sacred text. It was an interesting visit that helped Year 5 learn more about Judaism.
