Intent
At St Alban & St Stephen Catholic Primary School, Religious Education lies at the very heart of our curriculum and our mission: Learning and Growing with God by our side. As a Catholic school, we are committed to nurturing and developing the whole child—spiritually, morally, socially and academically—recognising that each pupil is created in the image and likeness of God. We value the diverse backgrounds and starting points of our children and ensure that our learning objectives meet both their religious and educational needs.
Religious Education is a subject for all, rooted in collaboration, reflection and dialogue. We seek to foster each child’s natural capacity for wonder, awe and reverence, helping them to recognise and appreciate the spiritual dimension of life. Through a deep and systematic understanding of the Catholic tradition, alongside respectful study of other faith traditions, pupils are guided to reflect on the meaning and purpose of human life. In doing so, they grow in faith, knowledge and understanding, developing respect, empathy and a strong moral compass that prepares them for life in modern Britain and the wider world.
Implementation
Religious Education is delivered through the Archdiocesan RED Programme of Study, ensuring a structured and progressive development of knowledge across year groups. Learning builds from description in the early years to deeper analysis, comparison and evaluation as pupils mature. Prayer, celebration and reflection are woven throughout school life, creating a living Christian community. Teaching is adaptive and inclusive, enabling all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds, to achieve well, while high prior attainers are challenged through thoughtful questioning and philosophical enquiry. Strong links with home and parish support sacramental preparation and faith development.
We follow the Religious Education Directory, 'To know You more clearly', as the basis of our R.E. curriculum.

Impact
Pupils develop secure and confident knowledge of the Catholic faith alongside an informed understanding of major world religions and worldviews, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism and Buddhism. They make meaningful connections within and across traditions, recognising similarities, differences and the diversity within faith communities. Our pupils ask thoughtful and perceptive questions, evaluate differing viewpoints and express reasoned responses supported by evidence. When exploring sensitive or complex issues, they demonstrate respect, empathy and understanding, reflecting Gospel values and showing readiness for life in modern Britain and the wider world.
